Hi snagy, I use a mixture of Vallejo and Citadel (Games Workshop). The following seems to work fairly well - particularly if you are "batch" painting: (1) Prime whole figure. (2) Paint all steel areas Boltgun Metal (Citadel). (3)When dry, apply a wash of Nuln Oil (Citadel "Shade" - it's like an ink) to armour and mail - but not blades. (4) Dry brush raised surfaces with Natural Steel (Vallejo). (5) Highlight (sparingly) with drybrushed silver. The amount of steel/silver drybrushing will depend on whether you want the armour to look "box fresh" or showing the campaign wear or whether it's top-of-the-range Milanese plate (nobility) or Primark tat (everyone else!). I use Vallejo Matt varnish on all my figures - but occasionally apply a second coat of Vallejo Satin to armour etc. for added "sheen". Photos are of replica armour at the Bosworth Heritage Centre (definitely "box fresh") and of some batch painted Perry Wars of the Roses figures. Hope this is of some use. The idea of uniformly black-clad assassins/ne'er-do-wells has always troubled me. "I say, chaps. Let's all put on our internationally recognised murderers' outfits and go and whack Baron X. Remember, try not to do anything that might attract attention... oh, and before we go let's have a couple of spliffs ... but no giggling or stopping off to buy chocolate Hobnobs." I suspect, Japanese people spotted ninjas a mile off - but were simply too polite to make a fuss.
